Black in Biotech

This topic isn’t a walk in the park. Black people make a small percentage at about 3-9% of the workforce. It’s easy to feel discouraged, unwelcome, misinterpreted, not helped, etc. I’ve heard many comments from my peers. While some are uplifting many often come across pessimistic. Despite comments or individuals who try to belittle my knowledge. I’ve even heard comments from my own community that were not supportive.

I write this all to say. As a young black professional, please give yourself permission to take up space. Those comments will always be there. Someone will always have something to say even when you’re doing excellent… As a black woman starting at new companies it’s easy to feel doubtful. Especially working around new people that expect you to not know shit as a young black woman. I have felt this way many times. Be your own cheerleader and recognize it’s not what is said but the difference that you make that is remembered.

This is a reminder: that black woman are excellent and despite “society’s expectations” of us we shine everywhere.
